Norman Regional is nationally recognized for its commitment to heart and stroke care

Norman Regional Health System has received four 2024 Get With The Guidelines® awards for demonstrating our commitment to research-based guidelines for the treatment of heart disease and stroke, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer readmissions to the hospital. Norman Regional also received a fifth award, a Mission Lifeline recognition for our EMS services with EMSSTAT.

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke or heart attack, and heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States, respectively according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. AHA studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines.

The American Heart Association recently listed the yearly winners of the Quality Improvement projects known as Get With The Guidelines® in the “Best Hospitals” issue of U.S. News & World Report. Norman Regional received the following recognitions:

2024 Get With The Guidelines® – Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold

Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

Norman Regional has received the American Heart Associations’ Get With The Guidelines® – Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold recognition for its commitment to offering rapid, research-based care to people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).

According to the Cleveland Clinic, more than 546,000 people yearly experience NSTEMI, a dangerous heart attack caused by a partial blockage of blood flow to the heart. Like all heart attacks, this requires timely treatment to restore blood flow as quickly as possible.

Special recognition was also given for our focus on patients with diabetes, a vulnerable population among sufferers of Coronary Artery disease.

2024 Get With The Guidelines® – Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Gold

Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

Recognition for consistently supporting patients with science-based treatment and care coordination for people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A STEMI is seen as more of an immediate emergency over the NSTEMI, due to the presence of a totally blocked heart vessel.

2024 Get With The Guidelines® - Heart Failure Silver

Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll
Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

According to data from the ahajournals.org about six million U.S. adults are living with heart failure, a number that is expected to only increase over time with the aging of the population. While there’s no cure, patients can live a quality life by working with their health care team to create and stick with a plan that may include medication, symptom monitoring and lifestyle changes.

“Norman Regional is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Brittni McGill, Norman Regional vice president and chief nursing officer. “Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which studies show can help patients recover better. The end goal is to ensure more people in south-central Oklahoma can experience longer, healthier lives.”

Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke GOLD PLUS

Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite

Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

Get With The Guidelines®- Stroke supports hospitals with access to the most up-to-date research and scientific publications, clinical tools and resources and performance feedback reporting for continuous quality improvement.

The “Honor Roll Elite” is recognition that Norman Regional was successful in treating 85 percent or more of their eligible stroke patients in 60 minutes or less, from door to treatment time.

Our involvement with American Heart Association’s quality improvement programs demonstrates Norman Regional’s commitment to keeping up with the best and brightest practices in patient care and technology to continually improve the health of Oklahomans.

2024 - Mission: Lifeline EMS® Gold

Target: Heart Attack Honor Roll

Norman Regional rounded out their five awards with being presented with the American Heart Association’s Mission Lifeline EMS Gold achievement award for our commitment to offering rapid and research-based care to people experiencing the most severe form of heart attacks and strokes, ultimately saving lives. Emergency medical services staff can begin treatment when they arrive, up to an hour sooner than if someone goes to the hospital by car. EMS staff are also trained to provide resuscitation efforts to someone whose heart has stopped. People who arrive by ambulance may also receive faster treatment at the hospital.

Mission: Lifeline EMS® is the American Heart Association's national initiative to advance the system of care for patients with high-risk, time-sensitive disease states, such as severe heart attacks and strokes. The program helps reduce barriers to prompt treatment, starting from when 911 is called.

In addition to the five total American Heart Association Get with the Guideline and Mission Lifeline awards, Norman Regional was also recognized by US News & World Report as a High Performing Hospital in three areas: Heart Attack, Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
