A Norman Regional Cancer Management Center Nurse recently hosted a remarkable celebration for patient David Raeside, marking his final radiation treatment.
A lifelong lover of classical music and skilled violinist, Raeside was greeted with a heartfelt surprise: a live harp performance by one of his nurses, his favorite instrument played in his honor.
Accompanied by his son, John, Raeside was visibly moved as the serene notes of the harp filled the room. For decades, Raeside has been immersed in classical music, amassing a vast collection of CDs and even handcrafting six violins. His son shared, “It’s one thing to listen to music on a CD, but to experience someone playing so beautifully, just a few feet away, was truly unforgettable.”
Raeside’s cancer journey has been one of resilience and determination. Four years ago, he was diagnosed with a spinal tumor that left him in severe pain and nearly paralyzed.
After emergency surgery and intensive rehabilitation at Norman Regional, he regained his mobility. When faced with a recurrence requiring radiation therapy, he returned to the Cancer Management Center, where staff worked tirelessly to provide comfort and care.
The live harp performance was a touching tribute to Raeside’s courage and passion, offering a moment of joy during a challenging journey. His son expressed heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate gesture, noting, “This performance lit him up—it made his day, maybe even his month. It’s moments like these that make a difficult journey so much more bearable.”
The celebration concluded with Raeside ringing the ceremonial bell, symbolizing the end of his treatment. Surrounded by the applause of staff and loved ones, the moment marked the beginning of a hopeful new chapter.
At Norman Regional Cancer Management Center, advanced care is paired with meaningful human connections. Stories like David Raeside’s highlight the profound impact of compassion during life’s most challenging moments.
