Dr. Lana Nelson is a bariatric surgeon who specializes in surgery of the gastrointestinal system and is board certified in general surgery. She offers comprehensive surgical care for weight loss surgery, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn) disorders, and abdominal hernias. She is experienced in a wide variety of open, laparoscopic, and endoscopic surgery. Dr. Nelson was the first surgeon in Oklahoma to offer the TIF procedure (transoral incisionless fundoplication), an endoscopic procedure for heartburn.

Dr. Nelson has been in practice in our community since 2005. Her hometown is Bixby, Oklahoma. She attended medical school at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She then moved to Ohio where she completed my residency in general surgery at Ohio University Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She moved to Oklahoma after completing her fellowship at the University of South Florida Tampa General Hospital in Advanced Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Nelson also serves as Director of the Bariatric Service Program at Norman Regional Hospital.
She became interested in the medical field on a medical mission trip to Mexico while she was a freshman in college. She was intrigued by the physician's ability to impact an individual's health. Dr. Nelson decided to become a surgeon during her third year of medical school.
"Surgery appeals to me because of its immediate impact on certain diseases, and I also enjoy the ability to use my hands, and not just my brain," Dr. Nelson said. "I treasure the opportunity to help people through a positive transition to better health. Wellness is not a destination, but a journey. I hope to continue to be a positive beacon for patients on that journey."
