Norman Regional Celebrates Milestone with First Cardiac Procedure in Expanded Facility

Norman Regional Hospital proudly marks a significant milestone with the completion of its first cardiac procedure in the newly expanded catheterization (cath) lab. The atrial flutter ablation, performed by our new Cardiac Electrophysiologist (EP), Robin Singh, MD, signals a new era in advanced cardiac care.

A Milestone Achievement

Dr. Singh, Norman Regional’s first Cardiac EP, expressed his excitement about achieving this notable first in one of the hospital’s five newly equipped cath labs. “Our inaugural cardiac EP ablation at Norman Regional represented the successful culmination of a longstanding bold vision fueled by incredible investments coming to fruition. We integrated cutting-edge technology minimizing fluoroscopy exposure with the expertise of a multidisciplinary team to achieve our core mission—providing optimal patient care and serving our greater community,” said Dr. Singh.

Understanding Atrial Flutter

An atrial flutter is a type of arrhythmia where the heart chambers beat faster than usual and often out of sync. Unlike general or vascular cath labs that focus on heart vessel blockages, the EP cath lab is dedicated to examining the heart's conduction system for issues like atrial flutter.

The state-of-the-art EP cath lab at Norman Regional features a 3D mapping system based on magnetic resistance. This technology allows Dr. Singh to create a detailed 3D model of the atrium or ventricle and map electrical signals simultaneously, enhancing precision in diagnosis and treatment.

A Success Story

David Martin, the patient who underwent the atrial flutter ablation, was able to return home the same day, highlighting the procedure’s efficiency and effectiveness. Martin is optimistic about his recovery and is scheduled to follow up with Dr. Singh for the next steps in his cardiac care journey. “He’s [Dr. Singh] a very polite young man and hopefully he did a good job on it,” Martin shared.

Looking Ahead

Norman Regional’s new Cardiac EP service line represents a significant advancement in cardiac care capabilities. The addition of advanced technology and specialized care positions the hospital to provide even better care for the community.
