The American Diabetes Association recognizes Norman Regional’s outpatient program for its high-quality diabetes self-management education program, an essential component of effective diabetes treatment. The association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that our educational programs meet the national standards for diabetes self-management education programs.
Our services include:
- Type 1 and type 2 diabetes individual education
- Type 2 diabetes classes
- Flexible insulin management program
- Insulin pump training program
- Gestational diabetes program
- Diabetes and pregnancy assistance
- Medical nutrition counseling for prediabetes
- Educational support groups
Providers should download our Diabetes Referral Form for a patient if he or she:
- Is newly diagnosed
- Needs an annual assessment of education, nutrition and emotional needs
- Is experiencing new complications in self-management
- Is transitioning care
Norman Regional’s Diabetes Education Center includes a team of dietitians, certified diabetes educators, physicians and more.
Lubna Mirza, MD, is an endocrinologist. Dr. Mirza completed her residency in internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
Tan Pham, MD,is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. He attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, then completed his residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Department of Internal Medicine[KB1] (OUHSC). He also completed an endocrinology fellowship at OUHSC.
Certified Diabetes Educators and Registered Dietitians
We’re proud to have three certified diabetes educators (CDEs) and four registered dietitians (RDs) on our team. CDEs specialize in teaching people with diabetes how to manage their condition, and RDs are experts in nutrition and the regulation of diet.
Teresa Brown, MPH, RD/LD, CDE, is the supervisor for the Nutrition and Diabetes Education Center. Teresa graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science in dietetics and a Master of Public Health. She is a certified diabetes educator, pump trainer and lifestyle coach for the diabetes prevention program. Teresa has worked at the Norman Diabetes Education Center since 2002.
Christie Bruehl, RD/LD, CDE,is a community dietitian and diabetes education specialist for Norman Regional Health System. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science in dietetics. Christie is also a certified diabetes educator and Lifestyle Coach/Master Trainer Select for the National Diabetes Prevention Program. She is a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
Sarah Barnes, MS, RD/LD,is a community dietitian for Norman Regional Health System. She graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with both her Bachelor and Master of Science in dietetics and food management. Sarah has a certification in adult weight management. She remains active with the Oklahoma City District Dietetic Association.
Susan Pacific, RD/LD, CDE,is a registered dietitian and diabetes education specialist for Norman Regional Health System. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science in dietetics. Susan is also a certified pump trainer and facilitates the Diabetes Pump Support Group. She is a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators and Oklahoma City District Dietetic Association.
Cheryl Böst has been part of the Norman Regional Health System team since 2003. As department assistant, she provides secretarial and administrative support for the center, greeting patients and callers to determine how best to assist them. She also provides various types of education, appointment scheduling and referral assistance.
